Join Olivia Kenyon and I for the first of our New Beginnings creative workshop series. We'll be exploring the reciprocal relationships between art, nature and wellbeing. With beginner gardeners and budding artists in mind, we’ll guide you gently through the seasons, sharing hands-on, practical skills in a mindful and supportive way.

Olivia is the founder of Kin, a garden-based practice where she grows connection and creativity alongside flowers and food. Olivia and I have been friends and colleagues for years, united by a shared commitment to wellbeing, resilience, women’s leadership, and the joy of learning together — often over forgotten cups of tea and well-loved books.

What to Expect

Our first day-long gathering takes place on the cusp of the Spring Equinox — a perfect moment for new beginnings. We will gather in my cosy garden studio, tucked away in the picturesque, peaceful village of Bishopthorpe, just outside York. Before the workshop, you may wish to wander through the village and down to the rivers edge and parkland surrounding the Archbishop’s Palace, with its impressive Gothic architecture.

When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed with morning refreshments and the gentle excitement of a day set aside just for you. Shoes off, make yourself at home as we gather in good company, surrounded by thoughtful, special touches designed to treat and uplift you.

Our morning will begin in the garden, moving seamlessly between garden and studio depending on the weather. Together, we’ll notice winter’s leftover textures, tend what’s already growing, sow seeds, and create a small garden centerpiece to inspire our afternoon painting in the studio.

You’ll be encouraged to work experimentally and playfully, using whatever tools and techniques feel right for you — no prior experience necessary. It’s a day to slow down and create in flow. You’ll leave feeling proud and uplifted with your finished artwork, a mini garden, new skills for an exciting spring season ahead, and a renewed appreciation for nature.

Morning: Gather and grow, hot drinks and something sweet.

Midday: Heart‑healthy vegetarian food prepared by Phil, my husband, who knows how to nourish people well.

Afternoon: Playful painting with colour and texture inspired by nature.
